pavilion (n.)

etymology: c. 1200, „large, stately tent,” from Old French pavilion „large tent; butterfly” (12c.), from Latin papilionem (nominative papilio) „butterfly, moth,” in Medieval Latin „tent” (see papillon); the type of tent so called on resemblance to wings. Meaning „open building in a park, etc., used for shelter or entertainment” is attested from 1680s.

The course “Pavilion” in the fall semester (2017) at MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, Institute of Architecture) aimed to design and build a temporary pavilion at the Almássy Palace in the headquarter of AHA, on the corner of Ötpacsirta street and Múzeum street. During a three-week period four concepts were developed under the tutors supervision from which one direction was chosen and developed further as a team effort until the design reached it’s final form. The pavilion was built within the frames of the course as a community activity in October 2017 in cooperation with the Association of Hungarian Architects (AHA).
